To trust someone with your life is probably the biggest gift one person could give to another and I promise to always remember this and to never underestimate, undervalue or abuse the faith that they put in me.

We anaesthetised Mary. We gave her lots of painkillers and set her up on the ventilator that pumped oxygen in and out of her lungs to keep her alive. After a few chapters one could get the sense of similarity in the stories and so it was easy to lose interest. It maybe of greater value to those who work outside health and medicine specifically as it can call to attention the realities of the profession. Not sure whether this was published before or after Adam Kay's This Is Going To Hurt but a couple of the diary entries are just far too similar and feels like someone copied someone else's homework.

The narration is unconvincing and lacklustre and there is no real closure on any of the anecdotes. Sadly I persevered too long to be able to return the book but I probably won't bother finishing it. If only the narrator didn't sound quite so bored and disengaged it would help. Loved it, great story, well read, quite amusing at times. Would recommend this book to anyone. Loved this, as a health professional this was a refreshingly truthful insight. It is a funny insight into absolute reality. I highly recommend this book.

Max successfully shares the humorous side of the junior doctor experience whilst maintaining the humanity and compassion required for the job and doing it with humility. I wish the book had been available in the 80s, when I was a nurse in the acute sector and perhaps I may have been a bit more sympathetic towards the junior doctors! It was fine to listen to but it could have been so much better! Less talk about how difficult it was being a junior doctor and more about patients, treatments and medicine would have made it much more engaging.
